Who should stay off the Strip
Off-Strip is the right call for more people than book it. Repeat visitors who have done the Boulevard and want a nicer room for the money. Families who need a calm pool and a car anyway. Hikers and day-trippers heading to Red Rock, Hoover Dam or Valley of Fire. Convention attendees who want to be near the convention centre without Strip pricing. Anyone who values sleep. And, increasingly, people who simply resent paying $45 a day to park and use Wi-Fi.
It is the wrong call for a first visit of two or three nights where the whole point is the Strip, or for anyone without a car who plans to be on the Boulevard morning and night. Off-Strip resorts run from budget locals' casinos to five-star suburban retreats; this page covers the mid and upper tiers. Red Rock Resort and Summerlin
Red Rock Resort is the flagship of the Station Casinos group and the best off-Strip hotel in Las Vegas by most measures: a large, low-rise resort at the western edge of the valley with Red Rock Canyon five minutes away, rooms that rival mid-Strip luxury, a sprawling pool with sandy-bottomed areas, a proper spa, a cinema, bowling, a kids' area and a restaurant line-up that locals actually use. Resort fees are lower than the Strip and parking is free. Rates run roughly $150 to $300 midweek as of 2026, more at weekends.
Next door, the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort (with the Rampart casino attached) offers Marriott points, lush grounds and a quieter, more traditional resort feel. Downtown Summerlin, a large open-air shopping and dining district with the ballpark, is between the two and the Strip. The Strip is 20 to 25 minutes by car.
Green Valley Ranch, M Resort and Henderson
Green Valley Ranch in Henderson is Red Rock's sister property and nearly as good: Mediterranean-style pool grounds with a sand beach, a spa, a cinema and the District shopping centre across the street. It sits near the airport side of the valley, about 15 to 20 minutes from the Strip. M Resort, further south on Las Vegas Boulevard at St. Rose Parkway, has a sleek, modern feel, a big infinity pool, good restaurants and some of the best midweek value at this quality level in the city. Both offer free parking and lower fees than the Strip.
Henderson itself is a quiet suburb; the appeal is the resort, not the neighbourhood. For hikers, it is the better base for Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and the Valley of Fire. See the attractions hub for those trips.
Durango: the new locals' resort
Durango Casino and Resort opened at the end of 2023 in the south-west valley, the newest Station Casinos property and the first new locals' resort in years. It is smaller than Red Rock, with around 200 rooms, but they are among the best-designed in the city, the pool is stylish, and the food hall and restaurant collection are unusually strong. It draws a young local crowd at weekends. Distance to the Strip is about 20 minutes by car.
Because it is small, rooms sell out at weekends and pricing is closer to the mid-Strip than the older locals' resorts. For a couple who want a boutique-scale resort with a good casino and no Strip chaos, it is a strong pick.
Palms, Rio and the west side near the Strip
Just across Interstate 15 from the center Strip, the Palms was rebuilt from top to bottom before reopening in 2022 under the San Manuel tribe. Rooms in the Fantasy and Ivory towers are modern, the pool is lively, the restaurants are strong and the famous Sky Villas are still there. It is about a five-minute ride from Caesars Palace and the pricing is usually below comparable Strip rooms. Rio next door, once the home of the World Series of Poker, is being renovated in phases under new ownership; the redone areas and suites are good value, the untouched ones are dated, so ask which tower.

Virgin Hotels, Westgate and the east side
Virgin Hotels Las Vegas occupies the former Hard Rock on Paradise Road, a mile east of the Strip: modern rooms with the brand's quirky design, a big pool and beach club, a Mohegan-run casino, live music venues and a young, adult atmosphere. Resort fees and parking have been lower than the Strip. It is a short rideshare from the Strip and the airport. Westgate Las Vegas, the old Las Vegas Hilton, sits beside the convention centre with a monorail station in the building, enormous renovated rooms in some towers, the famous sportsbook and a large pool. It suits convention visitors and sports bettors and runs deep midweek discounts outside show weeks.
Both give you a genuine resort with a lighter bill; neither is walkable to the Strip in summer.
Getting around from an off-Strip base
A car is the simplest answer: every off-Strip resort has free self-parking, and Strip resorts charge for parking but will let you in. Rideshare from the west-side casinos to the center Strip is usually $10 to $18 outside surge; from Summerlin or Henderson $25 to $45. Several resorts run free scheduled shuttles to the Strip, with limited late-night service. Westgate has the monorail. Off-Strip mistakes to avoid
- Booking Summerlin or Henderson without a car. Rideshare costs will erase the saving.
- Assuming "near the Strip" means walkable. The freeway crossings are hot, long and unpleasant on foot.
- Ignoring loyalty programs. Station Casinos, Boyd and the independents all discount members and send strong midweek offers.
- Relying on the last shuttle. It leaves early; keep rideshare as the fallback.
- Overlooking the resort as the destination. Red Rock, Green Valley Ranch and M have enough on site for a full rest day.
