Why the first weekend of the tournament is special
The NCAA men's basketball tournament runs for three weeks in March and early April, but Las Vegas cares about the first four days most. On the Thursday and Friday of the opening round, sixteen games are played each day from morning until late evening, with four often running at once. There is no better place to watch that many games simultaneously than a Las Vegas sportsbook wall, and fans have known it for decades.

The Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight weekend that follows is busy but calmer, and the Final Four is a normal weekend unless a regional is being hosted locally.
Sportsbook parties and how to get in
For the opening weekend, the major sportsbooks convert into ticketed venues, much like Super Bowl Sunday but for four days. The Westgate SuperBook, Circa, Caesars Palace, the Cosmopolitan, Resorts World and the MGM properties sell multi-day packages with reserved seats, food and drink credits and, at the top, private booths and suites. As of 2026, single-day seats typically start at a couple of hundred dollars and full-weekend premium packages run well into four figures; check each resort's site because they go on sale in January and the good seats are gone within days.
A cheaper tier exists: the ballroom viewing parties. Several resorts fill their convention space with screens and long tables for a lower entry fee and a bar. They lack the sportsbook atmosphere but you can actually get in. And walk-in space at smaller books, especially off-Strip and Downtown, exists if you arrive before the first tip at 9am.
Bracket basics for first-timers
You do not need to follow college basketball all season to enjoy the weekend. Fill in a bracket beforehand, even a random one, and every game will matter to you. In the sportsbooks the betting is simple: pick a team against the spread or on the money line, or bet the total points. The staff will walk you through the slip. Because so many games run at once, a small bet on each of the early games keeps the whole day interesting.

The opening weekend is the busiest mid-March weekend and one of the busiest of the spring. As of 2026, Strip resorts that normally charge $150 to $200 on a March Saturday run $350 to $600 across the Thursday-to-Sunday window, with three-night minimums at the sportsbook-heavy properties. The following weekend is also busy because it overlaps with spring-break season and the start of pool season, but rates fall noticeably. The rest of the weekend
Games run from 9am to around 9pm Pacific, which means the evenings are free. That is a bonus, because mid-March is when pool season opens at most resorts; the dayclubs launch their seasons around this weekend and the weather is usually warm enough by afternoon. Restaurants are busy but not impossible, and the nightclubs are full of sports fans in a good mood.
